Horror Writing Tips to help you in your Writing

1. Twist the familiar into something Frightening:

  • Childhood Games: A group of friends revisit a seemingly innocent childhood game, only to discover its dark and sinister origins. What childhood pastime becomes a horrifying ordeal?
  • Urban Legends: Local folklore warns of a vengeful spirit lurking in the abandoned tunnels beneath the city. Is it just a spooky tale, or does truth lurk in the darkness?
  • Domestic Horror: The seemingly perfect suburban family harbors a chilling secret. Unveil the cracks in their facade and expose the true horror lurking beneath the surface.

2. Use your Darkest Fears as Inspiration:

  • Sleep Paralysis: The terrifying sensation of being awake but unable to move. Write a story from the perspective of a character trapped in this state, haunted by nightmarish visions.
  • Claustrophobia: A character becomes trapped in a confined space with a malevolent entity. Amplify the claustrophobic atmosphere and the desperation for escape.
  • The Unseen: A presence lurks just beyond sight, its intentions unclear. Play with the psychological torment of the unknown and the constant fear of what might be lurking in the shadows.
